Animal Nutrition Center - San Luis Obispo, Calif.
CLIENT
California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly)
The project involved replacing the 60-year-old feed mill located on the campus of California Polytechnic State University with a new Animal Nutrition Center.
The new feed mill allows for commercial feed manufacturing for all animals on campus, as well as contract research conducted by the University, allowing the students to understand how feed processing systems operate. The mill will be used as the foundation for industry short courses.
Fabrication of the modular frame started in April 2006. A major benefit of using modular construction was to reduce the amount of on-campus prevailing wage labor (the labor savings allowed more of the limited available funds to be spent on process equipment). Subassemblies were built in the Ibberson shop in Minnesota and shipped to San Luis Obispo, California. Dry start-up was complete 30 days later, with final start-up completed at the end of July 2007.
More than half of the new feed mill equipment was donated by industry members. The major equipment suppliers also voluntarily signed on to help with a continued maintenance program for their equipment.
