Working in a limited space with a five-week outage duration, the team engineered, procured, constructed and per- formed startup of the air quality control system to tie it into Brayton Point’s Unit 3 at New England’s largest fossil fuel-fired power station.
The team was awarded the contract to engineer, procure, construct and startup the dry flue gas desulfurization (DFGD) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) systems to an existing 630-megawatt fossil fuel-fired power plant. This project uses an Alstom fabric filter/novel integration desulfurization (NID) system consisting of eight separate reactor subsystems that include a baghouse compartment housing the ash byproduct filter bags, a lime mixer/hydra- tor and four total shared lime day bins. Other project equipment includes an ADA PAC system, two ID booster fans, a lime handling system with two lime storage silos, a byproduct handling system with two storage silos and a compressed air system.
The Alstom NID system is a new technology to the U.S., and no operating facility larger than 100 megawatts currently uses this particular desulfurization method. The NID system eliminates the need for a spray dryer absorber, while still successfully reducing sulfur dioxide (SO) and particulate matter emissions.
